Feds, Idaho county will try to settle road lawsuit

8/17/2012

The federal government and commissioners of a central Idaho county have agreed to try to settle a lawsuit over the Bureau of Land Management's decision to block off a remote mountain road. The agency closed Herd Creek Road in Custer County more than a decade ago, but earlier this year county commissioners began warning they'd soon remove the boulders blocking the road because they think the BLM didn't properly consult with locals. Both sides sued the other, and the case has been moving through Idaho's U.S. District Court since April. In court documents filed Wednesday, attorneys for the U.S. Department of Justice and Custer County agreed to try to resolve the dispute without going to trial.
